LM7480: Using input capacitors

Part Number: LM7480

Tool/software:

Hi team,

Our customer is considering a circuit using an input capacitor with the LM7480.

When the load is shorted, the discharge from the input capacitor will momentarily exceed the SOA of Q2, damaging the Q2 FET.

They are considering changing to a FET with a higher tolerance and increasing the number of FETs in parallel, but are there any other ways to prevent the FET from being damaged?

  • Hi Hirotsugu,

When the load is shorted, is there any protection mechanism, as you mentioned that the high current passes for a short moment. Is that short moment coming from the response time of the protection scheme?

Better MOSFET SOA is the best solution here.
