BQ4050: Few questions about BQ4050 fuel gauge

Part Number: BQ4050
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-00982

Tool/software:

Hello,

I have been working with the BQ4050 fuel gauge and came across a few questions I hope you can help me with. I apologize in advance for the fact that they are somewhat unrelated:

  1. The TIDA-00982 reference schematic for the BQ4050 fuel gauge mentions "for non-military drones." Is there a version of the BQ4050 designed specifically for military applications?

  2. The reference schematic includes a charger controller, but I plan to use an external charger for the battery. Do I need to include a connector for the charger to connect to the pack’s + input? What additional considerations should I keep in mind?

  3. Is the BQ4050 more suitable as a pack-side or system-side fuel gauge? Do you have any recommendations for system-side fuel gauges?

I appreciate any advice or insights you can provide. Thank you for your assistance!

  • Hello,

The TIDA-00982 reference schematic for the BQ4050 fuel gauge mentions "for non-military drones." Is there a version of the BQ4050 designed specifically for military applications?

There is not a specific version of bq4050 for military application.

The reference schematic includes a charger controller, but I plan to use an external charger for the battery. Do I need to include a connector for the charger to connect to the pack’s + input? What additional considerations should I keep in mind?

Yes, the charger would have to connect to the PACK+/PACK- side of the gauge system. Please ensure that the proper ESD mitigation is being used when adding the connector.

Is the BQ4050 more suitable as a pack-side or system-side fuel gauge? Do you have any recommendations for system-side fuel gauges?

I believe this is more suitable as a pack-side gauge since this allows the device to always be connected to the cells, allowing for the gauge to become as accurate as possible as it learns over time.

  • Hi Anthony, I have submitted your answer as a solution but I have one more question. Can I use the Pack+/Pack- XT60 connector also as my charger input, or should I add another connector?

    thank you.

  • Hello,

I see in the reference design the XT-60 connector is being used, so I believe this should be fine as long as the correct precautions are taken on the charger side.
