TPS65988: Not sure how to choose the appropriate part for the needs

Part Number: TPS65988

Tool/software:

Hello,

I would like to use TPS65988 for my project. However, it seems that there are several different versions of TPS65988 e.g. TPS65988DH, TPS65988DJ and TPS65988DK. May I know what is the difference between these 3 parts? If my project does not need to support Thunderbolt and USB4, does it mean that these 3 different parts are same for me and I can use any one of them? Thanks.

  • Hi E2E team,

May I have an update on the enquiry above? Moreover, we would like to choose TPS65988DH for our use. Since there is no EVB using this part, so we have bought TPS65988DJEVM for our testing. Are both the hardware and software tool appropriate for us?

    Thanks for your help!

  • Hi E2E team,

Sorry for pushing. Since I have read many posts about TPS65988 these few days and found that TPS65988DJ seems are different in software configuration with TPS65988DK, so I am so concerned that the TPS65988DJEVM would not work for our needs. May I have an update on this issue?

The aim of our needs is to use Port 1 for both source and sink power and port 2 for sink power. We would like to only use internal switches to do this. Moreover, both ports could handle USB data as well. We are going to use the EVM to simulate our case and I am now still studying the way on how to set the configuration correctly.

  • Hi YC,

Sorry for delay here. You understanding is correct that the differences in devices is FW configurations stored in ROM. TPS65988DK is our latest ROM revision is the one we currently recommend for all USB-PD alternate mode applications. The DH and DJ revisions are very old and are only recommended if following older Intel reference designs that require these products.

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • Hi Matt,

Thanks for your reply. Since we have already bought a TPS65988DJEVM in the market for testing, may we know what are the difference between TPS65988DJ and TPS65988DK? Could we still create a project by choosing TPS65988DH/ TPS65988DK in the Application Customization Tool and then load this configuration into TPS65988DJEVM for testing? Because we would like to know whether we could still use TPS65988DJEVM to test/ verify the features for our development.

As mentioned in the first post, our project would not need to support Thunderbolt and USB4.

    Thanks for your help.

  • The difference is in compliance FW and bug fixes, there is no difference in hardware. I would still recommend TPS65988DK, but you can still leverage your TPS65988DJEVM for development.

    Thanks,

    Matt
