TPS546B24A: Inductor saturation current

Part Number: TPS546B24A

Tool/software:

Hi Team,

When selecting an inductor, is it necessary to eliminate the saturation current of the OCP threshold selection inductor? If the inductor is selected based only on Imax, but at OCP, the inductor is deeply saturated, is there any risk? Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Hailiang

  • Hi Hailiang

Tomoya will check and reply to you in these days.

    Thanks and best regards.

  • Hi Hailiang,

The best practice is to select the inductor's saturation current higher than the OCP threshold. Especially if they are using an inductor with a sharp saturation point (e.g., ferrite core, etc.), the inductance can drop dramatically. Saturation can also cause increased core losses and heating, which may lead to thermal runaway or damage to the inductor.

    Thank you,
    Tomoya
