BQSTUDIO: Fuel gauge configuration in production

Part Number: BQSTUDIO
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EV2400, BQ27427

Tool/software:

Hi

As part of a medical device development we need to configure a fuel gauge. We are a beginner in the field of fuel gauge. The battery we are planning to use is a 16mm dia and 5.4mm tall Li-ion coin cell with 110mAh capacity. The purpose of this battery is to act as a back up source when the main battery (18650 cell with inbuilt fuel gauge) fails. The case when working with this back up battery will be very rare. So we thought of identifying the sleeping fault of the backup battery with a fuel gauge. I have few queries regarding the fuel gauge configuration.

  1. Though there are many fuel gauges available for batteries from 100mAh capacity, can they find the sleeping fault of a 110mAh capacity? If yes can anyone please suggest some good fuel gauges with I2C communication and system side implementation? We are open to any other simple method to check this fault without fuel gauge.
  2. I couldn't find the steps for using the golden file in mass production. Can anyone please tell me how to use the golden file in mass production?
  3. If there are any firms in Asia/ Europe that provide battery management system for coin cells or configure fuel gauge ICs with coin cells, kindly provide the contact details.

By going through various Q&A in forums and TI tutorial videos I understood that the following steps have to be performed for configuring the fuel gauge (Please correct me if I am wrong).

Configuration using BQStudio software

  1. Connect battery to fuel gauge evaluation module.
  2. Connect it to interface board EV2400.
  3. Connect interface board EV2400 to PC.
  4. Set the parameters in the BQStudio parameter menu
  5. Perform learning cycle
  6. Create golden image in DFFS/BQFS format
  7. Use it in production

"A learning cycle is typically performed on a single representative battery pack during the development stage. The resulting values are then programmed into every pack during mass production as there should be minimal pack-to-pack variation for a well-controlled manufacturing process. The flash image extracted from a so-called "golden pack" during development is called the "golden file" and is used in mass production."

  • Hello Vishnu,

    1. Could you explain what the sleeping fault is? If this means what the gauge detects when current capacity is close to 100%, the gauge does not use remaining battery capacity to identify the state of the battery. It uses voltage and current readings taken periodically to do so. The bq27427 would be ideal for your application.

    2. If you have a golden file, you can use bqStudio to program this image to a new gauge.

    3. Could you elaborate on this? You could likely contact your local FAE for this.

These steps are correct. Let us know if you run into any issues.

    Regards,

    Siddharth
