TPS922054: long wire connection on the led side

Part Number: TPS922054

Tool/software:

For a new project, we are planning to connect 60 RGBW LEDs, with a typical Vf of 3V with current in the order of 2 to 4 amps, and we are planning to use devices from the TPS92205x
series, using hybrid dimming to minimize radiation of electrical noise into the environment or avoid interference in other equipment
and achieve deep dimming
However, the LEDs would be connected far from the drivers, at distances of up to 60 meters. We have some questions:
Do you think we are on the right path by choosing this component?
Is additional protection needed against voltage surge events induced by for example nearby lightning strikes or other forms of ESD, or how could we provide such protection
on the 60 meter wiring ?

Thanks

  • Hi Andre,

Using an LED driver to do PWM dimming (or hybrid dimming in low brightness) on LED(s) that are 60m away from the driver is very difficult as there may be a lot of delay and the control loop may not get into a stable operation in a PWM-dimming-on period.

We have a new device (which will soon be released) that can do the dimming at the LED side (The new device is placed close to the LED) and is very suitable for multiple-LED applications like RGBW LED. This device may help you solve the long-wire delay problem mentioned above. If you are interested in it, we can talk through e-mail.

I think ESD protection is needed both at the LED driver side and LED side. The TPS922054 has some ESD protection inside. For LED side, the new IC has some ESD protection inside and also additional protection for LED failure condition. Additional ESD protection methods should be used if the ESD in your system exceeds what the IC can withstand.

    Best Regards,

    Steven
