UCC28950: Custom design PSFB with Bi-Directional Power Flow.

Part Number: UCC28950
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28951, UCD3138

Tool/software:

Dear TI authority!

We are currently designing one power supply which can handle Bi-Directional Power Flow,
Specification for
Buck mode:
Primary: Input Voltage: 370VDC @ 3.4kW
Secondary: Output Voltage: 48VDC @ 50A
Boost mode:
Secondary: Input Voltage: 37-48VDC
Primary: Output Voltage: 370 VDC @  3.4kW

We are considered to use UCC28950 in PSFB mode for Buck mode in converter.
Boost mode will be achieved by microcontroller and keeping disable UCC28950 IC.
(PFA reference circuit created by power designer!)

We will like to keep out modified design decision taken confirm/review by ti team!

Queries:
1. Do you have any application note which describe how to calculate transformer related details?  (Like Windings, core structure etc.)
2. For L1 is it ok to use TMCS1127B1AQDVGR like IC with appropriate ratting?

Please let me know if you require any more details on this?
Best regards!

  • Hello,

Your inquiry is under review and I will get back to you shortly.

  • Hello,

I do not know of the UCC28950 or the UCC28951 being used in a bidirectional power supply.

There is an application note that goes through the step by step design process of a PSFB using the UCC28950 and UCC28951 PSFB converters.

However, the application note is based on the traditional PSFB and not a bidirectional DC to DC supply.

I do believe that bidirectional PSFB DC to DC supplies have been done with digital power supply controllers, with either the UCD3138 or the C2000 digital power supply controllers.

I wanted to see what there might be available in regards to reference designs for these design application in the TI reference design library, which can be found at the following link.

    https://www.ti.com/reference-designs/index.htm

I entered phase shifted full bridge in the search tool.  I found 4 bidirectional DC to DC power supply reference designs using a phase shifted full bridge (PSFB) as the power stage.

The following links will bring you to the 4 bidirectional DC to DC to reference designs.  These reference designs include schematics, bill of materials and test data.  They also can have design information that you may find useful.

If you have any questions regarding these reference designs please repost in the e2e, with the reference design number and power supply controller used in the reference design.  This is so the appropriate applications engineer can help answer any questions that you might have.
