BQ25756: MPPT tracking Sweep + Perturb and Observe?

Part Number: BQ25756

Tool/software:

Hi,

quick question: does the BQ25756 (or any similar IC) do  Perturb and Observe MPPT Tracking? Or does it only do a full sweep each few minutes and then stay at that opteration point until the next sweep? Do you have ICs doing Perturb and Observe along with the sweeping?

thanks,

Michael

  • Hello Michael,

The BQ25756 has perturb and observe and it only works when the max power point is decreasing. I'd recommend relying on the full panel sweep.

The BQ2575X family of ICs are the only battery charger ICs that we have that do perturb and observe.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

  • ok thanks. full panel sweep is fine, but for a moving solar panel on a vehicle it is to slow. so we need P&O along with sweeping from time to time. Is the P&O behaviour of the BQ2575X family described somewhere in a document? in the datasheet it is not mentioned at all...

  • Hello Michael,

The BQ25756 does mention P&O, but P&O can only track decreasing power and it can only track small changes in the solar panel's voltage. For a moving vehicle, I would recommend using a full panel sweep every 3 minutes.

If you have an MCU, you could also perform a full panel sweep every time the solar panel's power collapses.

  • you are right, somehow I did not see the info about P&O last time I had a look on the datasheet. there is sufficient information, I think this IC is fine for us then. thanks!
