LM7480: LM7480 - Same Functionality in different Package?

Part Number: LM7480
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5060, TPA3223, LM74912-Q1

Tool/software:

Hello all,

due to problems of the package type from the LM7480 i'm looking for the same functionality in a Pin-Package (SOP, SOIC, VSSOP, TSSOP .... everything except QFN/BGA/LLC).

The Part is used as a Powerpath controller with a inrush current controll. For sure it is possible to mimic the function with two different ICs. (e.g. LM5060 and LM74700x) but it would be prefereable to have it in just one package. Overcurrent Monitoring is not needed.

Are there any ideas here? Maybe there is some IC from TI which can perform this function or it is possible to use an LM5060 with a little additional circuitery here.

Working Voltage is 10-30V, Working Current up to 30Arms. Capacitive Load switched/driven: 3000µF

Thanks a lot!

Best regards,

Lukas

  • Hi Lukas,

    Can you list your requirements?

    1. Inrush current control

    2. Reverse polarity protection.

    3.

    4.

  • Hello Shiven,

    1. Inrush Control in necessary only in order to protect consecutive semicondutors. The System is a Liion-Battery (BMS is used in the Batterypack) supplied Audioamplifier with a DCDC Boost Converter based on the 3x TPA3223. --> Inrush Control can be done with just a controlled du/dt Slope. max. TurnOn Voltage is 24V with 3000uF of Capacitance to charge. StartUp Time is flexible between 50us - 150ms. This has to be done with Q2.

    2. Reverse Polarity Protection is not necessary. The function must be a Powerpath control for when the battery shall be charge and the system itself is supplied by a fixed 24V-Supply (hence, just an ideal diode funtion is necessary)

    3. System Function overall as in the LM7480x Datasheet Page 1, in red/blue the external inputs during charge-Mode. it shall be possible to use the amplifier while charging the battery (battery cannot be disconnected physically).

    4. Undervoltage/Overvoltage protection is not necessary but would be nice to have

    5. Overcurrent protection is not necessary, shortcircuit protection would be a nice to have.

    6. Overtemperature Protection is not necessary, it is done with external MCU.

Does this specifiy the application enough?

    Thanks!

  • Hi Lukas,

From the listed requirements, LM74912-Q1 is the best bet but is VQFN package.

    Regards,

    Shiven Dhir

  • Hey,

that is a showstopper for that IC. The LM7480 is already working in the design but the package needs to change. Any other Ideas? :D

  • Hi Lukas,

    Unfortunately, No.

Just out of curiosity, can you help me know the issue with package.

    Regards,

    Shiven Dhir

  • Hey,

two topics: Manual Soldering (it is a private design without commercial interest) and mechanical stability of contacts themself due to some bending strain on the PCBA.

    Best regards,

    Lukas

  • Hi Lukas,

Thanks for the info. Closing the thread now.

You can reply here if you need help further.
