UCC21750: Longevity and recommendation for new designs

Part Number: UCC21750

Tool/software:

Dear TI expert,

We're using UCC21750 for SiC based DAB converter. Can you suggest:

    - What is the recommended gate driver with similar specifications but for IGBT operation?

    - Is UCC21750 suitable for IGBT driving?

    - What are the design changes required between SiC operation and IGBT operation?

    - What is the longevity of this product?

Regards,

Jitendra

  • Hi Jitendra,

UCC21750 is suitable for driving both SiCs and IGBTs.

You might not need any design changes to the SiC driving circuit in order to drive IGBT. One thing you do want to check for is that IGBT usually has a larger gate charge, so there will be more power dissipation when driving IGBT, which could cause thermal issue. As long as that's not a concern for your system, UCC21750 is perfectly suitable for IGBT operations. If you want to share your schematic with us for review, feel free to post it to E2E.

UCC21750's isolation barrier has an operating life of 29 years with a working voltage of 1500Vrms.

    Thanks,

    Vivian

  • Dear Vivian,

Thanks. Thermal shouldn't be an issue as the switching frequency is 5 KHz. I will share the schematic for review.

I want to understand, do you have visibility for how many years this part would be available from TI to buy in future?

    Regards,

    Jitendra

  • Hi Jitendra,

Jumping in as our expert is out of office.

Our expert will review the schematics once received along with possible timeline.

It is very hard to predict the availability but this part was released in 2019 and has been a huge world wide success ever since hence I don't see the part not being available in future. Please let us know if you have any bulk orders to place so that we can put you in contact with our marketing team for pricing and availability.

    Hope this helps.

    Best,

    Pratik

  • Dear Pratik,

Thanks. Sure, I will contact. Currently we are starting with the design.

    Regards,

    Jitendra

  • Hi Jitendra,

Our guidelines state that TI standard products are not eligible for obsolescence if any of these three conditions exist:

    • The product has had any sales within the last five years (seven years for automotive or high-reliability products).
    • The product can be manufactured and has been in production for less than 10 years.
    • The product has any current customer demand.

Given that this part has been on market for 5-6 years and have numerous large customers, I don't expect to see this part off the market for a long time to come.

    Thanks,

    Vivian
