UCC28810: CS pin of PFC section is getting damaged

I am Engr. Usman Haider from Champion Fans, Pakistan. We are deploying chinese made BLDC motor drivers in our BLDC ceiling fans. These drivers have some issues. In the SMPS (AC-DC) section, we are facing surge-related problems that are causing MOSFETs and gate driver IC-OB3636 to get damaged. The CS pin of the IC has been damaged badly and the explicit resistance at the gate, source pins also got damaged. It seems like the PFC IC- OB3631 has a slow response time that allows the surge to damage the PCB. We want you to design a circuit using your ICs and MOSFETs or if you can suggest us something that we could add to our SMPS part so that this section could be ideal for a customer. The SMPS circuit diagram and the damaged PCB photo have been attached for your reference.

Can please share the schematic with UCC28810. We do not support debug of other ICs.

We did not used UCC28810. I am just taking as a reference so that we could resolve our problems. After an appropriate solution, we will shift forward to Texas instruments products.

Hi Usman,

I think it will be difficult debug for OnBright solution in this forum.

There are a number of reference designs using UCC28810 which you will be able to refer to from the link below:

This can be a good starting point to get started with a design based on UCC28810.

Do you consider UCC28810 better than OB3631? If yes. Please provide me a detailed answer. If there any other IC, that you think is the best one for our applications, please do suggest us.

I do not have a direct comparison between the two parts. Can you please share the requirements of your end system like PF, THD, efficiency etc. so that I can check if UCC28810 can meet your requirements?

PF is 0.98 and efficiency is 80% at full.speed.

Hi Usman,

Thank you for the specs. In addtion to above is there is any THD requirement?

PF of 0.98 will be difficult to achieve over full line range with this controller.

Difficulty does not matter. If this is possible, then do it. The power factor varies when I reduce the load. These requirements are recorded at full speed. If you do have any other IC better than UCC28810, do use that.
