BQ25185: Can a bare lithium polymer cell be connected to the BQ25185DLHR ?

Part Number: BQ25185
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ2980

Tool/software:

Hi,

So for a design we intend to use a battery that has no protection circuit integrated. The BQ25185DLHR seems to have according to the datasheet :

  • Battery undervoltage protection (BUVLO)
  • Battery short protection (BATSC)
  • Battery overcurrent protection (BATOCP)

Is there an additional circuit necessary or is this sufficent?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • Hi Swen,

For the safest operation, we typically do recommend a protection circuit in line with the battery, but these protection features should help in that matter. I would confirm with the battery manufacturer that these are the main specifications to protect for in your device.

One thing I would note is that the BUVLO protection will disable discharging if the battery has discharged below a certain level, but it won't be able to totally eliminate battery quiescent current, so the battery will continue to discharge albeit very slowly.

  • Hi Juan,
Thanks a lot for the fast reply.
Which single cell charging chip would you suggest, that doesn't have a protection circuit integrated?

  • Hi Swen,

This response was given for Battery chargers in general. The specific charging chip will be based on specifications such as battery capacity, chemistry, input characteristics and needed features.

If your cell doesn't have an integrated protection circuit, you can consider placing a discrete one on your board, such as the BQ2980.
