UCC28180: 3-Phase PFC controllers with Bridge rectifiers

Part Number: UCC28180
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCD3138, UCC28056

Tool/software:

Dear Sir,

Looking for 3 Phase PFC controllers for  implementation, looking for support 18VAC -25VAC 3 phase input.

Recommendations of right controllers for this application along with design support documents.

  • Hello G.S.

Thank you for your interest in PFC controllers from TI.

At this time (and not likely in the foreseeable future), TI does not have any analog PFC controllers specifically dedicated to 3-phase AC input.
We do have the UCD3138 digital controller to implement 3-phase PFC, where one device can control PFC for each of the 3 input phases.
(I am sure that we had a reference design for this, but I cannot find it on TI.com anymore.)

If you intend to simply rectify the 3 phases with a 6-diode bridge, then almost any one of our analog controllers can be used, except the UCC28056.
That one is too specialized to be a good match for your 18-25Vac input range.

If you require very low distortion on each phase, then you must use a separate analog PFC controller for each of the phases plus 3 separate DC-DC stages, and then combine their outputs to a common ground after the DC-DC isolation, or use a single UCD3138 controller, but still 3 separate isolated DC-DC stages to combine the outputs.

The 6-diode rectification needs only one PFC controller and one DC-DC stage, but THDi is higher.

    Regards,
    Ulrich
