TPS92643EVM-204: What imposes the 20W Limit?

Part Number: TPS92643EVM-204

Tool/software:

I need to drive a string of LEDs (10 V) with 2.2 A from a 14 V source. The datasheet for TPS92643EVM-204 lists 20 W max power output, and the silkscreen lists "PiN: 20 W MAX".

What is it about the design that imposes this 20 W limit? Thank you.

  • Hello Matt,

This is usually a limit based on thermals.  Our assumption is that the EVM is exposed to 105C and our parts much stay within the max operating temp.  The thermals are based on losses so maybe the conditions you have will have lower losses and maybe you can operate at the higher currents.  If your operating temp range might be lower, for example 85C, then you could probably expand your losses.  It is dependant on your thermal management and the losses in your entire desired operating range.
