TPS65987DDJ: Hardware schematic requirements for Dual Role Port

The Expansion Connector, TIVA, Aardvark connector are added for additional debug features. The EEPROM is needed to store the PD configuration which TPS65987 will read from upon boot-up. The alternative to not including an EEPROM in your system is to use the FLxx commands from an external microcontroller to load the PD configuration upon boot-up. The resistor divider is for TPS65987 ADCIN1/2 pin strapping which configures the PD device I2C address and its default configuration (before a PD config loaded via EEPROM or EC). The external power path is an optional power path that can be added but is not required.

TPS65987 requires an external flash to store the PD configuration. Upon boot-up (either VIN_3V3 or VBUS comes up first) TPS65987 will attempt to read from this flash and load the configuration into the PD SRAM. The configuration is a full-flash binary that is generated from the TPS65987 Application Customization Tool. See excerpt below from TPS65987DDK datasheet: 

For new designs, I recommend switching over to TPS65987DDK instead of TPS65987DDJ or TPS65987DDH. DDK is the latest version of the TPS65987 series with PD3.1 compatibility.

From the design since it uses a DCDC (TPS55288) this reference design is only meant for source-only. If this fits your design requirement then it is okay to follow.

The EVM was designed to showcase the different possibilities of using TPS65987D, however each user application can be slightly different from one another.  Depending on your application the design might differ from the EVM or the PMP board.
