TPS65950 heating when audio out is enable

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65950, DM3730

I've built a board with DM3730 + TPS65950, all works fine, but when audio output is enabled, the TPS65950 heats a lot. (nevertheless the audio works fine)

My sch is like beagleboard XM regarding the TPS65950. Except for the VINTANA2.OUT capacitor connection. The VINTANA2.OUT has 2 outputs connected together to a capacitor on beagle board, but not on my board.

On my board each VINTANA2.OUT output has it's own capacitor and they are not connected together.

I tried to connect the both output on my board but the TPS65950 still heating.

Maybe the TPS65950 is damaged by no connecting the 2 outputs VINTANA2.OUT ?

Have you ever heard about this heating problem ?

Thanks,

  • Heating problem is a new observation for VINTANA2.OUT connection error. I am surprised that you hear audio. The type of connection you have is incorrect and you need to fix this. By doing this you may be damaging the internal circuit. Try the fix on a new board before you use audio and see if you see better results.

  • we have the problem :

On Beagleboard, like on my board, the TPS65950 "Predriv.right" output (ball B8) is connected to ground. Maybe because this ball is mux with the input ADCIN7 ( selected by default at reset)

But our software selects the the Predriv ouptut instead of the ADCIN7, so the output is shortcut to ground => heating !!

  • Beagleboard doesnt need audio, hence the predriv pin is grounded. If you need audio then it must be connected to VBAT. Please refer the schematic checklist and data manual for connections of this pin.
