BQ2970: Protection Circuitry Recommendations for ER34615M Battery

Part Number: BQ2970

Tool/software:

Hi ,

We are working on a new project with Wi-Fi capabilities, and for power, we are using the ER34615M battery (3.6V/19Ah), which is a primary battery.

We need protection circuitry to safeguard against reverse polarity and short circuits for the project. I came across the BQ2970 but am unsure if it is suitable for primary batteries, as the datasheet mentions charging and discharging features.

Could you please provide recommendations for protection circuitry suitable for this scenario? I am open to any suggestions or alternatives you might have.

Thank you!

  • Hello Gustavo,

For reverse-polarity this device may not work well. Some external circuitry may be needed to ensure that a reverse-battery will not damage the device. Short-circuit circuit protection could also be possible with this device.

Now, this device was not made for primary batteries. When a battery is first connected Vss needs to be briefly shorted to PACK- for the device to properly start-up.

We unfortunately do not have a dedicated primary protector IC.

  • Hello Luis,

Thank you for the clarification. I understand the limitations regarding reverse-polarity protection and the need for additional circuitry. I also appreciate the note about shorting Vss to PACK- for proper startup when using a primary battery. I'll take that into account for the design.

    Best regards,
    Gustavo
