Dear TI support team,

We are planning to integrate a USB Type-C port with our GPU card that supports dual-role functionality and HDMI.
I noticed that the TUSB1046 is recommended by TI for this purpose. I've created a preliminary diagram to illustrate how we might incorporate the TUSB1046 with the GPU.

However, I am uncertain about how the TUSB1046 operates. Could you please provide some clarification on the TUSB1046A-DCI USB Type-C DisplayPort ALT Mode 10 Gbps Linear Redriver Crosspoint Switch?

I understand that the HPD signal is redirected from the GPU to the TUSB1046A-DCI, but how is the HDMI CEC pin connected?
Could you recommend a PD controller that is compatible with the TUSB1046A-DCI?
Does the TUSB1046A-DCI require any pre-programming, or does it function automatically without the need for software control?
There are two HPD inputs on the TUSB1046A-DCI. Which one should we connect for my specific setup?

Hi,

Per the DP Alt Mode on USB Type-C Standard, DP++ adapters are not supported on the USB-C-to-DP adapter’s DP connector, so you will have to configure the dual-role GPU to be either a DP only source or a HDMI only source.

For using TUSB1046 in a HDMI over USB Type-C application, please see this app note, https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slla333/slla333.pdf. But I have not seen a PD controller that can support HDMI Alt Mode.

HDMI CEC signal and DDC signal provided by SCL and SDA is integrated on CC communication signaling using the A5 and B5 pin on the USB Type-C connector when operating in HDMI Alt Mode.

Thank you for the clarification.

I'll set the GPU to use HDMI as the only source.

I understand that no PD controllers support HDMI Alt Mode.
Could you let me know if the TPS65987D can control the TUSB1046 via GPIO or I2C?

Hi,

TPS65987D provides control for external DC/DC supplies, high speed data MUX (TUSB1046), and other peripheral devices through either GPIO or I2C interface. But it only supports DisplayPort Alt mode, it does not support HDMI Alt Mode.

Hi,

The block diagram looks correct.

HPD will be driven from the TPS65987D to the TUSB1046A and the GPU.

TUSB1046A will also handle the AUX/SBU switching.
