BQ40Z50-R2: BQ40Z50-R2 BMS for a 4S4P battery pack

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76930, BQ76972, BQ40Z50

Tool/software:

Hello,

We are considering the BQ40Z50-R2 to build a BMS to handle the charge/discharge and monitering of a 4S4P battery pack.
Is it possible to use BQ40Z50-R2 for this use case?

kind regards

  • Hi Abdel,

Can you please confirm the capacity size of the cells being used? Also, please ensure the specifications detailed below and in the datasheet fit your application:

  • Hi Anthony,
Thank you for your quick reply!
We are targetting 200 Wh battery pack and considering the 4S4P and 8S2P arrangements. The input power of the system ranges from 10Vdc to 36Vdc. We will be using DC/DC buck and boost converters to generated the required voltage rails (48V, 5V, 3.3V).
I was exploring the BQ76930 and BQ76972 for the 8S2P arrangement.
Which battery monitor IC do you think fits better with the requirements an can handle better the balance charging and discharging of the 16 cells?
    Thanks,
    Abdel

  • Hi Abdel,

Thank you for the clarification, what voltage are these cells rated at? Please ensure that with four in parallel they do not reach the maximum capacity value for the bq40z50 at 65000mAh.

Regarding the 8S2P arrangement, I believe this would be a better question for our monitors team. If you post a new thread with either the bq76930 or bq76972, they will get back to you with their recommendations.

    Regards,

    Anthony

  • Hi Anthony,

Thank you for the confirmation about the BQ40Z50. The battery voltage per cell is 3.6V and the capacity up to 3500mAh.

I will explore with the monitors team the use of the BQ769xx family for the 8S2P battery pack!

    Thanks,

    Abdel

  • Hi Abdel,

Understood, please let us know if there are any other gauge questions.
