BQ40Z80: Learning Cycle Failing, FC not setting after charge cycle.

Part Number: BQ40Z80
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, GPCCHEM

Tool/software:

Hi,

I am having trouble to get my current cell configuration to complete the learning cycle.

My battery's cells are 3.2V, 2000mAh LiFePo4 in a 2s configuration. I have been having some issues with the balancing of the cells that will be visible in the logs on the discharge cycle, can this cause any issues?

On the charging cycle the FC bit does not set when charge is terminated. I let the relax period continue after charging  anyways and I do not get LStatus to change to 0x05. It stays on 0x04.

I have tried 2 different battery chemistries obtained by the  GPC tool with no luck.

This is the 3rd cell configuration that I have trained in the last couple of months, was able to succeed with the first two bit this configuration is giving me trouble.

I have attached the logs from BQStudio of my most recent Learning Cycle attempt, will be posting the .gg file as soon as I get in the officeLCLogs.log. Will be continuing to try and find a solution in the meantime, will update if I find anything.

Kind Regards.

  • Here is the .gg file. Also reupload of the log file seems like it failed in the first post.LC.gg.csv3480.LCLogs.log

  • Hello Hermaans,

The imbalance of cells is pretty concerning. I would recommend trying to get the cells balanced. Can you also share with me the GPCCHEM report that shows the matched ChemIDs. Can you also share with me the data sheet of the battery you are using. I want to verify all the settings are correct.

    Regards,

    Adrian

  • Hi Adrian,

Thank you for the response and apologies for the delay on my side.

Since last I posted I have recalibrated my device, I found it to be reporting incorrectly so must have made a mistake initially. I have also improved on the cell balancing.

I then redid the BatChem analysis and started a new Learning Cycle. Unfortunately I failed again after the charge cycle. FC not setting and LStatus stays on 0x04.

I am attaching all the data that I have since I have recalibrated: bqStudioExport.gg.csvDatasheet_IFR18650.pdf8233.GPCPackaged.zip8233.GPCReport.zipLearning Cycle Logs.log, I think we can disregard the previous logs. Also attaching the battery data sheet.

Note a was mistaken on the opening post, the cell capacity is actually 1500mAh.

Thanks and looking forward to your response

  • Hello Hermaans,

I believe the battery is not being charged properly. Please charge the battery pack to 7.3V and then do a constant voltage charge at 7.3V and taper down to about 50mA. In the log I see the voltage doesn't go all the way up to 7.3V and does not stay constant when it tapers down.

    Regards,

    Adrian

  • Hi Adrian,

I did make some adjustments and the pack does charge to 7.3V now and tapers to 50mA. I also dropped the charge current to 300mA to be more inline with the Battery Spec's. It seems to me that the voltage is stable enough in the CV charge region when the tapering happens. Still the same problem with FC not setting unfortunately. I am attaching my latest Learning Cycle attempt logs. Does the battery chemistry look fine to you?

I am currently doing Learning cycles for different Battery packs, I will return to this one in about a weeks time to give it another go.
