BQ40Z50EVM-561: Just starting and cannot find battery in the latest Chemistry list.

Part Number: BQ40Z50EVM-561
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, GASGAUGECHEM-SW, GPCCHEM

Tool/software:

I am new to this. I originally had BQ Studio 1.3.124 downloaded in February, then a collegue took over the project. Now I am back on it. After looking at some of the posts in this forum I decided to upgrade.

First issue, I could not download the stable release. There was no download button next to it on the website, So I decided to take a chance and down load the beta. It looks like it installed O.K. and it recognized the bq40z50EVM-561 and so I guessed I hooked it up correctly and  the drivers are O.K.

Second issue. the 4 batteries in series I have say ICR 18650 2500 mAh 3.7V No brand. So I go to the Chemistry Programming Page. Since I do not know the brand I sort on the model. None of the ICR18650 batteries in the list say 2500 mAh. The closest I can find is EVE 2550 mAh but it says 4.2 V not 3.7 V.  None of the batteries listed say 3.7V Some have no voltage, the ones with voltage say 4.2V or 4.35V.

Maybe I need a new Chemistry data base.  It says mine is 1099 and check for newer chemistry update on ti.com.  So it says the version on line is version 1116 so 17 versions later than what I have, I download it. and it is a zip file. I was hoping for a self installing.   I found SLUUC94 -- April 2020 Paragraph 2.2 says

2.2 Updating the Chemistry in bqStudio
Once you have downloaded the updater, in the File menu options, select Help, then Update Chemistry.
Click the Cancel button on the Chemistry Updater dialog window. In File Explorer®, move to the folder
where you downloaded the file and select it.

The pop-up window says:

Automatic update is currently not supported. Chemistry version is 1099.
Click O.K. then select the downloaded chemistry update file. The chemistry update file
is at www.ti.com/.../gasgaugechem-sw

So I click on O.K. and it pops up a file selection window. So I select the version 1116 zip file I downloaded.

It flashed something about updated and disappeared. So did it really work? I restarted BQ Studio and it worked.

I cannot really tell if anything in the ICR 18650 changed there is still nothing like ICR 18650 2500 mAh 3.7V that I can match.

So what do I do now?  I am worried I use something with the wrong voltage my battery might not like it and get hot and maybe vent.

Do I find another battery that is on the list and pitch these 4 I have?  I was hoping to get this working today. Charging and discharging and balancing.

Looking at the registers it looks like Cell 1 is 1476 mV, Cell 2 is 3519 mV, Cell 3 is 3518 mV and Cell 4 is 3508 mV. So I need to balance these batteries.

I do not know what to do next.

  • Hi Kipton,

The test version of bqStudio will work for this. No issues here.

Second issue. the 4 batteries in series I have say ICR 18650 2500 mAh 3.7V No brand. So I go to the Chemistry Programming Page. Since I do not know the brand I sort on the model. For this, if the cells in use cannot be found in the chemistry database, please use the GPCCHEM tool attached below. This will provide the most accurate match chemID to the cells in use, so long as the given chemID from the tool has an error of less than 3%. The instructions for this tool can be found in the link as well.
