Using BQ78412 with 2 series 12V cells

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78412

Is it possible to use the BQ78412 with two 55Ah 12V lead acid batteries in series for a nominal Vbat of 24V? Looking at the datasheet it seems like, particularly during charging, we would be coming pretty close to the maximum rating.

Would another option be to "trick" the fuel gauge by using a voltage divider to make it look like one 12V battery and then doubling the voltage reported by the BQ78412 in our software?

Thanks for your help!

  • Using a single BQ78412 directly with two 12V batteries in series won't work in most applications. Note that the upper limit on the sense voltage is 26V (i.e 13V per battery) & most chargers would put out a higher voltage than this.

The "trick" you mentioned will work.
