BQ25185: Designing 1S4P 18650 Cells Solar powered charging

Part Number: BQ25185
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25895, BQ25798

Tool/software:

We are currently working on a device that has 6V 10W solar panel input. And I am using 4X18640 Cells in parallel to increase backup. Is BQ25185 a good option for that? Or I should go with some other option maybe with MPPT support? Kindly guide us what's best option for us. Thanks

  • Hello Zunuran,

Since you have a 6V, 10W solar input source and a 1s4p battery, I recommend using a switching charger instead of a linear charger. A switching charger will typically charge a 1s4p battery faster than a linear charger.

    Here are some options:

    • BQ25895: buck charger with solar input/MPPT support
    • BQ25798: buck-boost charger that provides an MPPT algorithm

I recommend you visit the TI parametric part search page, where you can filter by "Solar input/MPPT" under the "Features" tab:
