TUSB1044RNQEVM: PD Controller

Tool/software:

TUSB1044RNQEVMW uses a 5V power supply. If power is taken from the Type C plug and 100W is provided to the device connected to the Type C socket, does it require the addition of a PD controller with DRP function? Do you have any model recommendations?

Hi,

The TUSB1044EVM is not designed for a USB-C VBUS above 5V, so I don't recommend passing 100W through the EVM itself.

If you do want to pass higher wattage through the USB-C connection, then yes you need a PD controller. My team only supports our USB re-drivers, however I believe the maximum power delivery over type-C is 60W (20V at 3A). Yo may want to check with the PD controller team by submitting another E2E with a PD controller device. An example of a PD controller we've used on some of our EVMs is the TPS65987DDH. Using this part name in the E2E post would refer your question to the PD controller team.

DRP function is only required if you want to support both a source and sink implementation on the same port. If you only need to act as a source, you would only need DFP functionality. If you're going for a sink on one side and a source on the other (passing power through your board), you may need two PD controllers. This would be a better question for the PD team.
