BQ27Z746: BAT_SP and BAT_SN function

Part Number: BQ27Z746

Tool/software:

1. Whether there is current limit resistor between BAT_SP and BAT_SN? The customer want to know, if SP and SN are shorted momentary, whether BQ27z746 will be damaged?

2, Could you explain why is the voltage of the cell directly connected to the MCU? Any special benefits?

  • Hello Fabio,

I am not sure what you mean by the current limit resistor between BAT_SP and BAT_SN.

I am not sure what you mean by having the voltage of the cell directly connected to the MCU, I assume you are referring to the connection of BAT_SP and BAT_SN? These pins are primarily used by some charger ICs that require a direct path to the battery voltage. For most all applications, the BAT_SP and BAT_SN pins are left float and simply reading the voltage over I2C is sufficient.

    Robert.

  • Hello Fabio,

Is there a reason that the customer is trying to short circuit the BAT_SP and BAT_SN pins? I would not recommend doing this in normal operation of the gauge.

    Regards,

    Robert.

  • They do not want to short the SP and SN.

They are just worried about this.

Because If the customer intends to connect these two pins to system side, may encounter short circuit issue.

They are thinking whether need to add additional protection circuit.

So could help to confirm this questions?

It seems not a complex question.

  • Hello Fabio,

The BQ27z746 gauge does have short circuit protections on the BAT_SP and BAT_SN pins. Please refer to BCP and BDP, and BCN and BDN in the TRM for more on this.

    Regards,

    Robert.
