BQ79616: Communication with Micro Controller

Part Number: BQ79616
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76952, BQ76972

Tool/software:

Hello,

We are working on BMS application where AFE is used to monitor Voltage & Temperature and report the data to Microcontroller, we are measuring the current using external sensing circuit. For our application case, the AFE will be standalone (i.e., we are not stacking the AFE's). Regarding the communication interface of BQ79616 AFE with Microcontroller,

  1. What are the options available for non-isolated communication?
  2. Are there some considerations we need to know for SPI communication?
  3. Is there a provision of using I2C communication protocol?

  • Hello Bhuvaneswar,

What is the application for this? Any particular requirements?

Depending on your application I would recommend to use the BQ76952 or the BQ76972 instead, which is a 16s battery monitor and protector with high-side FET drive for protections, integrated coulomb counting/current measurement with an external shunt/sense resistor. It implements I2C/SPI communications as well, so you could choose to do either one.

The BQ79616 is not able to do SPI on its own, you would only be able to communicate with it using UART. If you need SPI and the BQ79616 you may have to use the BQ79600 bridge device.

Hope this answered your questions Slight smile.
