LM5176-Q1: Supercapacitor Charging Current

Part Number: LM5176-Q1

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am considering using the LM5176-Q1 for a supercapacitor charging application, but I would like the charging current to be less than my nominal operating system current.  Is it okay to connect the ISNS resistor as shown in the image below?

I think this would allow me to set the supercapacitor charging current with RSNS (ideally < 1A), while the system load is only limited by the cycle-by-cycle current limit (in my case set to 5A).  When the input supply is removed, the system load is them powered off of the supercapacitor with only RSNS in between them.  Is this correct?

  • Hi Jessica,

yes, this should work but please consider that for limiting the current the output voltage will be decreased, so during the time the super cap is charged and the current will be limited the output voltage will be decrease and that also applies for the System load.

    Best regards,

     Stefan
