BQ79616: Measurement and Mutual Exclusion Control

Part Number: BQ79616

Tool/software:

Question:
I’m currently evaluating the BQ79616 but have not yet conducted actual circuit tests. I am concerned about possible interference between cell balancing and voltage measurements. The datasheet mentions no automatic adjustment for OV/UV thresholds during balancing.

  1. Is there a recommended strategy to mitigate any potential interference, such as pausing balancing before taking measurements?
  2. If so, what is the suggested delay time between pausing balancing and taking voltage readings to allow the filters to settle?
  3. Are there any best practices for managing mutual exclusion between these two operations?

Thank you for your guidance!

  • Hello User,

There could be some slight drops in voltages when cell balancing due to the current draw to the CB pins. OV would not happen during balancing unless the cell is being charged, but balancing itself may just cause a slight drop in voltage depending on the balancing current and cell impedance.

Measurements can happen still on the VC pins if the ADC is running. You could stop balancing and enable measurements to decide if you want to continue balancing or not.

Additionally, it is possible to configure the BQ79616 to stop balancing if it reaches any particular low voltage. The timings for that is not something that is not something that  we have much recommendations for.
