UA78M: Looking for alternative for UA78M12HMQB

Part Number: UA78M

Tool/software:

Dear TI Team,

I am an engineer over at KLM, for a Board repair we are looking for a LDO replacement.
Unfortunatly, the Nomenclature and PN available in our Manuals are always behind on what the market has to offer.

I found out that there are alternative namings for this LDO: SG7812AT883B, HS5E8071-203-1012, 280-22002-327, 280T1020-529

I also found the electrica layout where the LDO is used.

I am currently looking for an alternative PN that matches the spec.
Vo = 12V, Mounting is SMD
I am also looking for the meaning of HMQB part of the PN, for the device nomenclature is not clear on this.
I used SLVS059U Rev. May 2024 UA78M Datasheet for reference.

Looking forward to your assistance.

Kind Regards,

Michiel Geerts

  • Hi Michiel,

Thanks for reaching out! The best alternative will be TPS7B8601QKVURQ1. This device is in a TO-252-5 package, rated to 40V Vin, 500mA output current, and 12V output can be achieved by setting FB resistors. We unfortunately do not have a 12V fixed output alternative that is pin-to-pin with UA78M.

The minimum output capacitor recommended for TPS7B8601QKVURQ1 is 2.2uF, and recommended nominal input capacitor is 1uF. So, Cout would need to be increased compared to the current design, but Cin could be reduced substantially. Even generally speaking, 68uF is quite high for an LDO input capacitor, so if there are similar designs you're using that have high Cin, this value could likely be reduced to save system cost, unless there is a specific reason this value was chosen.

As far as nomenclature goes for "HMQB," I'm not able to find information about this specific OPN in our databases, so I'm not able to confirm what HMQB means. I believe it may be an alternative part number for UA78M12CKVURG3. This is a bit of a unique case, but for future reference, usually information about device nomenclature can be found in the datasheet, typically found shortly before the Packaging Information and Orderable table. For UA78M, the nomenclature table is on page 22.

Feel free to reach out for further guidance.

    Regards,

    Kelsey
