TPS2121: Maximum output continuous current limit

Part Number: TPS2121

Tool/software:

Hi,

I have a query regarding the maximum continuous current that can be handled by TPS2121. In datasheet, it is mentioned that the IC can passthrough maximum output current of 4.5A. But also, it is mentioned that the Rilm can be set to 18.7K for getting output current of 5.2A. What does this 5.2A mean? Is it referring to peak current or continuous current? Need clarification on the current limit settings and maximum current the IC can handle.

  • Hi Karthic,

Let me check and get back on this.

  • Hi Karthic,

    Sorry for late reply.

Continuous max current is DC current which device can support without any concern. FET will be in linear region. It is 4.5A. Device will not do any limiting at this value.

Current limit is the value at which device will limit the current, FET will be in saturation region. Ultimately device will turn off when in current limit due to overtemperature protection as FET is stressed.
