I am currently working with a team that is trying to design a power distribution board for a mars type rover, we are planning on using a 48V battery as our main power source and were looking into Buck converters to step down the voltage for our smaller electronic components. At the moment we are thinking that we will need about 7 or 8 of these to step down to the voltages of 24V with current draw of 2A, 15V with current draw of 10A, 12V with current draw 3A, 9V with a current draw of 3A, 5V with a current draw of 3.5A and another 5V with a current draw of 500mA and 3.3V with a current draw of 500mA.  Also I saw that in the data sheet that this converter controller could be controlled with external circuitry are there any additional examples of circuitry that could fit our step down voltages? Also would you say that this controller would be good for our application or would you recommend we go with a different converter, if so which one?

  • Hello Christian,

    There are a number of options for current draw less than 4A.  However, you can certainly use this device for all of the specs stated above. -  Certainly the 12V @ 10A would be a good fit for the LM5148.  

    As for the Circuitry you referenced in above, what control would you like to implement in particular?  Feel free to reopen thread and elaborate if needed.

    I wanted to clarify my inquiry regarding the control circuitry and how the external components may vary based on different applications outlined in the datasheet. Are there any evaluation boards or reference design documents you would recommend for our application? Specifically, would the LM25149-Q1 or LM5149-Q1EVM be suitable for our needs?

    Additionally, I need to correct my previous statement about the 48V to 24V conversion. I initially mentioned that the conversion would require only 2A, but since the 24V will be used to power 6 stepper motors pulling approximately 2A each, the total requirement will be around 12A. Can the LM5148 handle that amount of current for the voltage step-down? Alternatively, would it be more effective to use multiple LM5148 chipsets to distribute the power among the stepper motors? If so, what configuration would you recommend—1 converter for every 2 stepper motors or 1 for every 3?

    You can use a single LM5148 for 12A output current.
