TPS25750: USB-C battery charger design

Part Number: TPS25750
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: USB-PD-CHG-EVM-01, , TPS25751, BQ25790, BQ25798, BQ25792

Tool/software:

We are working on a battery charger design with USB-C.

So far we have been following the design of evaluation board USB-PD-CHG-EVM-01.

I have a few related questions:

1. The EVM board we bought has TPS25750 on it. It seems the newer version TPS25751 should be used for new design. Is TPS25751 100% backwards compatible with TPS25750? Can we just change the BOM with new part number and keep the circuit working without changing any other design?

2. When we use the online GUI to program TPS25750 to work with BQ25798, there is no option for BQ25798, should we check the option for BQ25790 and BQ25792?

3. Is BQ25798 advanced version of BQ25790 and BQ25792? Shall we use BQ25790 or BQ25792 instead of BQ25798?

Thank you.

  • Hi Lu,

    Thank you for reaching out!

    1. Yes, the TPS25751 is recommended for all new designs. It is pin-to-pin compatible so the circuitry will be the same. If you are using an external EEPROM in your design, please ensure that it is at least 36 kilo-bytes.

    2. Yes, that is correct.

    3. I will loop in the battery charger experts to comment on this.

  • Hi Lu,

BQ25798 is later version of BQ25790/2.  BQ25790/2 were intended for applications with non removable battery, like cell phone.  BQ25798 does not have that limitation.

  • Hello,

I am not very sure I should post them here. Anyway here are my questions.

    1. We have made our design with BQ25798. We want to make 20 in first round. Why BQ25798 is out of stock?

    2. Is BQ25792 pin to pin compatible with BQ25798? If we can not get BQ25798 quickly, I am thinking of using BQ25792 temporarily. Can we just change BOM and drop in BQ25792 in place of BQ25798?

    Thanks.

    Lu

  • Hi Jiang,

Regarding 1, unfortunately, I can't help with that.

    Regarding 2, yes.
