BQ76972: FET driver IC necessity for low side switching with BQ76972

Part Number: BQ76972

Tool/software:

I want to use BQ76972 for low side switching circuit. The reference manual does not specify , will it be mandatory to use external FET Driver IC for low side switching??

  • Hello Divya,

Yes, you'll need external FET drivers for low-side implementation. Please refer to Section 2.2 of the BQ769x2 FAQ which includes an application note to assist with that. This additional application note may also be useful along with the one the FAQ recommends: Multiple FETs with the BQ769x2 Battery Monitors.

  • Reference : Application Note Using Low-Side FETs with the BQ769x2 Battery Monitor Family

Page:11  Shows driving the FETs without external driver. The application report shows examples of direct drive of the FETs with the digital outputs.

What are the limitations of using such circuit in addition to the fact the drive output maximum voltage will be 5V/6V.

In the subsequent pages multiple FETs are also driven as such.

  • Hello Divya,

The design considerations one needs to make using DDSG/DCHG pins to drive the FETs are mostly listed out throughout the application note and depending on what you want in your system, can be seen as limitations. For example:

Section 5 FET Driver Implementation begins showing the usage of a FET driver in the circuit.
