BQ76930: Cell connection order

Part Number: BQ76930
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76942

Tool/software:

Hello,

I have two 4S batteries (each with its own balancer connector) connected in series, so with such connection I get 8S battery. I would like to measure voltage of each cell and I'm planning to use BQ76930 instead of BQ76942 because of simplicity. Is it important in what order are batteries connected - let's say - is it important to connect firstly "bottom" battery or 4 lower cells in 8S structure to BQ76930, or can "top" battery or upper 4 cells be connected firstly to BQ76930 without any damage of IC?

Many thanks,
Kind regards,
Dejan.

  • Hello Dejan,

It is typically better to connect BAT-/Vss first. Section 10 Random Cell Connection – Within Limits of the bq769x0 Family Top 10 Design Considerations has discussion about random cell attachment of this device, that may be useful for you.

I would suggest the BQ76942 if you want to create a new design, it is much more robust to random cell attachment and has better accuracy and features.

    Best Regards,
