LM5190-Q1: LM5190-Q1 Doubts

Part Number: LM5190-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5190

Tool/software:

We need a few clarifications before taking it to design.
1. The IC says it can provide 2.5A for gate drive but the package is small so do we need a separate gate driver IC to drive the top and bottom mosfet?
2. IC deadtime for top and bottom is small of 21ns, it might result in shoot through condition. How to handle it.
3. IC needs current sense which is high side sensing and the limit of sense is 60mV, which is too low that with shunt sensing it will be difficult to cater the noise problem. Do we need opamp based filtering?
4. We need to provide an analog voltage at the Iset pin for CC mode. Please Check .
5. IMON/ILIM is used to monitor the load current and can be used as a sense for MCU. Please check.
6. At BIAS pin we can provide the output voltage to bypass the VIN pin for internal working voltage of the IC. Please Check.
  • Hello Muzammil

    1. No, LM5190 provides two MOSFET drivers. You don't need to use gate driver ICs

    2. No need to worry. LM5190 provides adaptive deadtime function.

    3. Typically, it is okay to use down to 2mΩ sense resistor.

    4. Yes, CC mode regulation target is controlled by the ISET pin voltage

    5. Yes, if we assume the inductor current = the load current. IMON current is proportional with inductor current.

    6. Yes, if VOUT is greater than VBIAS-TH

  • 2. We have observed shoot through in Mosfets having Ciss 5nF. Mosfets with higher continuous drain current usually has high Ciss and ours is a high current application as well. Will this cause any problems ? How to tackle this it so there is not shoot through?

  • Hello Muzammil

    • Please route HO-SW traces in parallel, also route LO-GND traces in parallel.
    • Please locate the MOSFETs close to the IC.
    • Please avoid crisscrossing gate traces (HO and LO).
    • Please use at lease 4-layer PC board so that you can have a ground shield layer.
