LM74502-Q1: Single, bipolar TVS for surge protection

Part Number: LM74502-Q1

Tool/software:

We have a design target to utilize LM74502-Q1 up to at least +58 V operating voltage, and in best case, +65V

For surge protection, we hope to be able to utilize one single bipolar TVS, to protect from both positive and negative surge transients.

In the datasheet, design example at page 17, I can see that SMBJ58A is recommended to limit positive surges, while SMBJ26A is added for negative surges.  Is this solution to handle specifically the very powerful negative surge of ISO 7637-2 pulse 1?

Our product needs to handle both positive and negative surges, but not to the level of ISO 7637-2 pulse 1.

In order to simplify, and save one component, could we use the bipoar SMBJ58CA instead, and still have some surge protection that LM74502-Q1 will survive?

  • Hi Oyvind,

Yes, SMBJ26CA is specifically added to clamp ISO 7637-2 pulse 1.

Adding SMBJ58CA may or may not be appropriate depending on the transient level. If the negative transient is higher than the abs-max rating of the controller, SMBJ58CA will not clamp it and the controller will be damaged.
