TPS65070 and bq27000: work in conjunction?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65070, BQ27000

Hi,

I would like to ask a question on battery capacity.

I searched TPS65070 datasheet for "gauge" without finding. And in "Features" I didn't see any description on capacity gauging ability. So does this mean this TPS65070 is NOT designed with battery capacity gauging ability?

I also found on TI website that there are dedicated Battery Gas Gauge ICs such as bq27000.

Question 1:

So if a system desires battery capacity gauging ability, should ICs like bq27000 and TPS65070 be used together?

Question 2:

However, I have also heard from some technician that no battery gauging chip can measuring remaining energy stored in a battery, and what they actually do is to measure the voltage, and somehow manifest it such as displaying battery grids like on a cellphone. However, if the requirement is only to measure battery voltage, could TPS65070 suffice? Does it have built-in functionality to gauge battery voltage?

And could anyone explain why bq27000 is called "Battery Gauge Gas"? And does it measure remaining voltage or energy?

  • Zheng, it looks like you are in the initial stages of a new design.  I would like to encourage you to contact your local distributor for assistance in generating a top level block diagram and then for selecting individual ICs to meet your requirements.  Your local distributor FAE will be a good source of basic power knowledge and can answer your questions in face to face meetings.

The TPS65070 does not contain a gas gauge.  A gas gauge measures battery capacity, not just battery voltage.  Your local FAE should be able to help you with the details.  I'm What type of application are you designing?  Can you provide your company name and location so we can better assist you?
