BQ40Z80: technical question

Part Number: BQ40Z80
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50

Tool/software:

hello,

i would like to use BQ40Z80 as balancer and gas gauge for 2 cell pack.

is there any protection in case of reverse inserted/connected of one or more of the batteries?

Can the battery or the component be damaged in such a case (whether the charger is connected or not connected)?

The data sheets only mention the case of reverse connection of the charger itself.

By the way - in the data sheet section 9.2.2.4.3 it says that Q4 is intended to protect Q3 but according to the drawing on page 26 I think that Q5 protects Q4, am I right?

regards

Avi

  • Hi Avi,

I do not believe there is a specific protection for reverse connected cells. If the voltage applied to the voltage sensing pins exceeds the absolute maximum rating, then there can be damage to the device.

By the way - in the data sheet section 9.2.2.4.3 it says that Q4 is intended to protect Q3 but according to the drawing on page 26 I think that Q5 protects Q4, am I right?

Please allow us to confirm this.

    Regards,

    Anthony

  • Dear Anthony,

Do you have any idea how to protect if the batteries are inserted upside down?
Is it possible to get the PCB design files of the EVM card (for ALTIUM) so that I can make a correct editing without mistakes?
Can you do an experiment on the EVM card and connect one or all the batteries in reverse?

    regards

  • Hi Avi,

Do you have any idea how to protect if the batteries are inserted upside down?

I believe a reverse polarity protection circuit could be used, however I do not believe we have any reference designs with this currently implemented and the bq40z80.

Is it possible to get the PCB design files of the EVM card (for ALTIUM) so that I can make a correct editing without mistakes?

I am not allowed to share these files due to them being internal, however their images can be found within the bq40z50 EVM User's Guide.

Can you do an experiment on the EVM card and connect one or all the batteries in reverse?

The gauge will not turn on due to no sufficient voltage reaching the BAT pin of the device.

    Regards,

    Anthony
