BQ25620: Powering RTC prior to BAT pin

Part Number: BQ25620

Tool/software:

Hi

We are adapting BQ25620 IC in our design. We have RTC IC that consumes sub micro amp. The RTC is being powered directly from the battery which is also connected to BAT pin (so the battery V+ is connected to both RTC and BAT pin). When we switch BQ25620 to shipping mode, the current consumption is higher than expected for the RTC approx 325uA while it should be 600nA (including BQ25620 in shipping mode). We tried to switch to shutdown mode but still same behavior.

Is it ok to connect RTC IC prior to BAT pin? Could this be the issue? Appreciate any recommendation or suggestion

  • Hello,

Thank you for reaching out via E2E. Considering the current draw of the RTC IC is "sub micro amp" from the perspective of the BQ25620 IC having the RTC IC connected at same node as battery is not a concern. The current draw is small enough that it should not impact charging.

In ship mode current consumption from BQ25620 should be a maximum of 0.5uA, as listed on datasheet page 8. Is ship mode quiescent current within spec with RTC IC removed from the circuit? I would not expect RTC IC at BAT pin to cause an issue with BQ25620 ship mode.

    Best Regards,

    Garrett
