TPS1H100-Q1: Open Load Protection Concerns with Variable Load

Hello,

We are planning to use the TPS1H100BQPWPRQ1 to switch a variable load that ranges between 5mA and 2A, with the load always connected (in fact the load in this case is the BLDC driver DRV10983SQPWPRQ1 also from TI). I am concerned that, due to the open load protection feature, the switch might detect the standby current of the load as an open load and cut power to it.

Is there a way to disable the open load protection to prevent this from happening? Alternatively, would adding a fixed 30mA load at the output help solve this issue?

Hello,

Version B of this device can be used. On that version the open load state is judged by the user.

From the datasheet it does look like the 5mA load will trigger the open-load detection.

As you suggested adding a fixed load will eliminate this issue. Using 30mA the device will assume normal operation.

Alan thank you for your answer, so in version B if the load is 5mA the switch will still be enable to turn on right? If im driving the switch with 24V I will still be able to see 24V at the output no matter if the current is very low?

Hello,

In the on-state, for the current-sense version device (version B), on-state open load and short to battery are recognized as an extremely-low voltage level on the current-sense pin

As seen in the fault table, the open load condition can be judged by the user.
