BQ25616: Battery charging circuit

Part Number: BQ25616

Tool/software:

Hi team,

I am considering charging a 1-cell lithium ion from USB typeC, but do not know what kind of charger to connect.
We think that 5V1A is sufficient for charging, so we think that connecting only the BQ25616 will be fine, but should we use a CC controller or PD controller?
If I should use a CC(PD) controller, what controller do you recommend?

Best Regards,
Ryu.

  • Hi Ryu,

This part uses D+/D- lines for input detection not CC lines. Those lines come directly from the attached adapter. Please make sure to multiplex the D+/D- lines with your MCU, as the input detection cannot be done when the MCU is connected.

  • Hi Mike,

    Thanks for the reply.
No data lines are needed as they only charge the battery.
The configuration assumes that the BQ25616 is connected directly from the connector to a 1-cell battery.
We do not know what kind of charger will be connected to the connector.
I am concerned that it will break when a PD-compatible charger capable of outputting large voltages is connected, but if I pull down the CC line with 5.1kΩ, is this a problem?

    Best Regards,
    Ryu.

  • Hi Ryu,

This part does not do CC detection. Please connect D+/D- lines of the attached adaptor to control the input detection of the BQ25616. Type C connector has backwards compatibility with D+/D- and its lines are on the pinout.

  • Hi Mike,

    Thanks for the reply.
Sorry for the lack of explanation.
I am not particular about this device.
I wanted to ask for advice on what device to select for the Type-C power feed port, not knowing what kind of charger will be connected.
As I told you the specifications, I would like to charge 5V1A for 1 cell Li-Ion.
I was hoping to find a device like the MAX77757 (ADI) that supports both the CC controller and BC1.2, but I could not find such a device at TI.
Therefore, I asked if it is possible to support both by pulling down the BQ25616 and CC pins.

    Best Regards,
    Ryu.

  • Hi Ryu,

D+/D- communication is run by the adapter. If you need CC control I would recommend posting a question with the USB PD team. I am linking them in this thread here.
