Part Number: TPS25983

Tool/software:

TI recommends a protection Schottky diode to address negative transients due to switching of inductive loads, and it must be physically close to the OUT pins. I am intrested in learning more about this. Do we need to place a diode to supress the back emf generated by the inductive load while switching? 

DO you have any simulations on this issue?

    Hi Vikram,

    Diode helps to clamp the negative voltage at the output during quick turn off at the output.

    No, I do not have any simulation results.

    This is an example from some other testing I did. This is not from TPS25983 device. Just for reference purpose. If you observe, the Vout is going to -1.5V during output short circuit.

    Thanks for the information. To address the -1.5V in the above testing,
    1. what Schottky diode would you recommend? Do you have to pay attention to the diode breakdown voltage? 
    2. If you don't have the diode to clamp the -Ve voltage on the output which is generated by inductive loads, how does this voltage effect the power supply?

    Abs min of the device will gets violated. Internal ESD protection diode will flow this high current and that can damage the diode or the part.
