TPS65216: TPS65216 DCDC Inductor & capacitor max values

Part Number: TPS65216
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMDXEVM438X-EPOS, TMDSEVM437X

Tool/software:

Hello,
In datasheet, DCDC1 and DCDC2 are described to have max output capacitance of 100µF, but accepting a 500µF remote capacitance.
Can you detail what is this remote capacitance? Is that the total distributed value on the board?
Since DCDC3 and DCDC4 do not have this particularity and are rated for 100µF max, would it be still good to have 100µF as output capacitor  plus 100µF as remote capacitor?
BR

  • Hi Stephen,

Because of the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S., TI E2E design support forum responses may be delayed from November 25 through December 2. Thank you for your patience.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Stephen,

Yes the max output capacitance 100 uF refers to the local capacitance placed immediately close to the output pin. While the 500 uF "remote capacitance" value refers to the total capacitance on the rail, typically near the FPGA being powered.

For DCDC3 & DCDC4, the local capacitance limit is the same, and should not exceed 100 uF.
There is no strictly defined limit on the remote capacitance for these rails, but 100 uF of remote capacitance would be OK.
For reference, the TMDSEVM437X and TMDXEVM438X-EPOS Evaluation Kit designs have a large remote capacitance on the DCDC4 rail, and operate without any issues.

    Best Regards,
    Sarah
