BQ2980: Short V- pin to VSS at every startup

Part Number: BQ2980

Tool/software:

I have an application where users can change the battery themselves.
I actually wanted to use a BQ297xx as a protective circuit. With this IC, the V- and VSS pins must be short-circuited each time the battery is inserted.
Of course, the end user cannot do this.

My question now is whether this is also the case with the BQ2980?
If so, does TI offer an IC where this is not the case?

Many thanks,

Simon

  • Hello Simon,

Either this, or a charger needs to be attached. If a charger is attached, the part will also wake.

My question now is whether this is also the case with the BQ2980?
If so, does TI offer an IC where this is not the case?

Correct. A charger attached is required to wake the device after cell attachment. Either charger attach or shorting BAT+ to PACK+ briefly.

  • Do you have an IC where you don't have to do this?
So where you don't have to do a wakup after connecting a cell.

  • Hello Simon,

Not for 1s protectors, unfortunately. This device was intended to be with the battery pack at all times, so it was not made to have a replaceable battery.
