UCC28600: Inquiry About UCC28600 for GaN-Based PFC + QR Controller Design

Part Number: UCC28600
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCG28826

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am currently working on a project to design a GaN-based Power Factor Correction (PFC) and Quasi-Resonant (QR) controller. My specifications include an output power of 150W and an output voltage of 24V.

I have a few questions regarding the UCC28600:

  1. GaN Drive Capability: Can the UCC28600 effectively drive a GaN transistor? I am specifically using the INN700TK190B in a TO-252 package, which has a VGS rating of 6V. However, the UCC28600 datasheet does not specify its output drive voltage. Could you please provide information on the gate drive voltage produced by the UCC28600? If the output voltage exceeds 6V, would I need to implement a voltage divider circuit to reduce it to the required 6V?

  2. Output Voltage Limitation: The UCC28600 datasheet indicates that the maximum output voltage it can provide is 19.4V. Given that my target output voltage is 24V, is there any way to achieve this with the UCC28600, or should I consider an alternative approach?

  3. Switching Frequency and Compatibility: I noticed that the switching frequency of the UCC28600 is specified to be between 130 kHz and 140 kHz. Is this frequency suitable for my design with the chosen GaN device? Additionally, can the UCC28600 drive both Enhancement-mode (E-mode) and Depletion-mode (D-mode) GaN transistors?

  4. Alternative Components: Are there any similar components available that offer a higher VCC for voltage regulation up to 80-100V? I noticed that the VCC rating of the UCC28600 is limited to 32V, which seems insufficient for my requirements.

Thank you for your assistance!

  • Hello,

Your question has been recieved and is under review.

  • Hello,

The UCC28600 was designed to use with Si FETs.  So you are correct that it won't easily work with GaN FETs.  However, I do have another suggesttion for you though.  TI has released a new QR flyback controller the UCG28826 with internal GaN.  It has been designed up to 65 W and might be right for your application.

The following link will bring you to the UCG28826 data sheet that gives details about the device.  If  you have any question about this device and/or how to design with it, please repost in the e2e with the UCG28226 in the thread title.
