BQ34110EVM-796: Issue in golden Image Discharging with BQ34110 Fuel gauge

Part Number: BQ34110EVM-796
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34110, BQSTUDIO

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am using the BQ34110 EVM to manage a 2-cell series configuration (2000 mAh battery) and have generated the golden image for this setup. During discharge testing, I am encountering the following issue:

  1. Discharge Cutoff Voltage: Despite setting the cutoff voltage to 5200 mV (2600 mV per cell in the Configuration), the discharge consistently stops at 5900 mV.

I have verified the settings and rechecked the golden image parameters, but the issue persists. I suspect it could be related to configuration mismatches, but I am unable to pinpoint the exact cause.

Attached are the golden image data and discharge logs for reference.

Has anyone encountered similar behavior, or could someone guide me on resolving this? Any insights on potential adjustments to settings or tests I could run would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

  • Hi,

I am confused on the questions, the BQ34110 does not control FETs to cut off discharge current, the LEN pin is used for learning.

    Regards,

    Diego

  • Thank you for your reply...

I resolved my previous issue by monitoring the overload current parameter. The set threshold was 3400 mA, but the actual current on the board was rising to 4500 mA. In such conditions, the system halts EDV (End-of-Discharge Voltage) value detection.

    Current Issue:
The remaining capacity (RemCap) value is decreasing significantly faster than the voltage. For instance:

    • Voltage drops from 6600 mV to 6200 mV, but the capacity decreases drastically from 100% to 7%.
    • Once the capacity reaches 7% (the BAT_LOW% parameter), it remains at 7% until the voltage hits the BAT_LOW cutoff, which is approximately 5400 mV.

    Questions:

    1. Why is the remaining capacity decreasing faster than the voltage?
    2. What can be done if the capacity holds at 7% until the cutoff?
    3. I applied smoothing techniques, but they did not resolve the issue. Are there alternative approaches?

attaching this schematics for your review :

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

    1) voltage and capacity are not a 1 to 1 correlation.

2/3) do you have a log of this?

    Regards,

    Diego

  • Thank you for your reply,

here is the Log file of issue: Golden_7%.xlsx

here is the configuration file of the logs above:  0842.Data_MEM.gg.csv

    > can you check if we are missing or setting wrong any parameters that causes battery percentage holding at 7% until it reaches EDV cutoff.

    > i also want to know why 0% is going at 5180mV even if i set EDV0 as 2600mV(5200mV).?

    looking forward to your reply.

    Thanking you again!

  • Hi,

I am having issues opening your log file. is it possible to send the file in a .txt format?

    Regards,

    Diego

  •  here is the log file :    discharge_log.txt

we suspect that this golden image is working fine with constant current load(3.4A) but with variable current from 3.4A to 4.5 A (we use our custom board as a load) it shows jumps and issues like i mentioned. is there any current parameters am i missing?

    looking forward to your reply.

    Thank you!

  • Hi,

Sorry, I still cannot make anything out of your log file. Can you generate a BQstudio log file?

    Regards,

    Diego

  • hi,

here is bqstudio log file of the discharge. you can notice that here capacity holds itself after 7%(BAT_LOW%).

how can i solve this ?

in EVM board it runs smoothly from 7000mV to 5200mV. and doesn't hold it self(capacity and percentage). but in our custom board this happens. capacity decreases faster than voltage. any parameters am i missing or wrong configuration?

    looking forward to your reply!

    Thank you!

  • Hi,

You are using the same configuration (.gg/.srec) for both the EVM and the custom board, correct?

Are all voltage, current and temperature reading correct on the custom board?

    I will review the data.

    Regards,

    Diego

  • Hi,

    - yes, same configuration is used in both EVM and Custom board. : here is gg.csv :   3005.forum_gg.csv

    - yes, voltage current and temperature readings are same.

    - for this issue, in TRM this is mentioned.."If an RC % level is reached on discharge before the voltage reaches the corresponding threshold, then RC is held at that % level until the threshold is reached. RC is only held if [VDQ] = 1, indicating a valid
learning cycle is in progress. " ... but what i am not able to understand is why capacity is decreasing faster in custom board and smooth (obeying cut-off voltages) in EVM .

    Thanking you!

    Priya.

  • Hi Priya,

can you share a schematic of your pcb?

    Regards,

    Diego

  • Hii,

here is the schematic of battery section:

    Thank you!

  • Hi Priya,

Sorry, I am still looking into this problem, thank you for your patience.

Can you share a log file of the evm preforming correctly?

    Regards,

    Diego

  • Hi,

This is the log file in EVM kit where this golden image is working.
