LM5158: Webench Vs Quickstart Calculator

Hello E2E Experts,

Good day.

We are designing a boost converter using TI's LM5158 with the following specifications:

  • Input Voltage: 3.3V–4.5V
  • Output Voltage: 45V
  • Output Current: 150mA

When I use Webench, the result is as shown in the link below.

But, when I use the above paramaters as inout to the excel calculator, and it is invalid.

Could you please guide us on which tool we should prioritize—the Webench Designer or the Excel Sheet Calculator? We had assumed that both tools, being provided by TI, would yield similar or consistent data, but in this case, the results are significantly different.

    Thanks for reaching out via e2e. Generally, the Webench Designer tool just gives general information about the devices you can use for your application, while the Quickstart Calculator provides an detailed overview of the feasibility of the design with that device. Therefore, the Quickstart Calculator always has higher priority than Webench.

    For this specific application, the reason why the slope compensation check fails is mainly the high duty cycle the device should work at, which is very close to the maximum value the device can do. Therefore, I would recommend to either adopt a flyback topology or consider adding a second boost stage (instead of going from 3.7V to 45V directly).
