BQ25616: Heat issue

Part Number: BQ25616

Tool/software:

Hi expert,

My customer is testing BQ25616 and met heat issue as below, please help to analyze:

  • Input voltage: 5V
  • Output current: 2.8A
  • D+/D-: Float
  • Temperature rise: 100℃ when running only 1min.

And below is schematic and PCB:

  • Hi Ryker,

What charge current and battery voltage has this happening? If the part's battery voltage is below MINSYS, the BATFET operates in LDO mode which has higher power loss.

Second, the GND path is not very well stitched together. There are only 4 thermal vias down to the bottom plane on the thermal pad. On our EVM, we have 9 and the majority of the bottom layer is the GND plane. In addition, the GND pins themselves are not brought onto the top layer. On our EVM we bring them out and sink them down to the bottom layer. Last, the SYS and BAT capacitors have one small via going down to the GND plane, requiring the connection to wrap around the edge of the board elsewhere via a very narrow trace. Please improve the GND plane connections.
