BQ24074: Designing with BQ24074

Part Number: BQ24074
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25628

Tool/software:

Hello Team,
We are using the battery charger BQ24074RGTR for one of our products.

The battery voltage is 4.2V.

Is there any battery charger IC available with both battery over voltage and under voltage protection?.

The minimum discharge voltage of the battery is 3V.

Also, in some battery chargers, we have seen that we need to connect the charger even if a fully charged battery is connected to it in the very first time.

Is this also applicable to BQ24074?.

Looking for your reply.

  • Hello,

The BQ24074 does not provide battery over discharge (i.e. under voltage) protection. You would need to use an external battery protector IC along with the BQ24074 to 3V minimum discharge voltage requirement.

We have some battery chargers such as BQ25628 which have battery over discharge protection built in, but none of our charger IC options will stop battery discharge at 3V. The built in threshold is typically a lower voltage such as 2.2V or 2.5V.

Also, in some battery chargers, we have seen that we need to connect the charger even if a fully charged battery is connected to it in the very first time.

You should not need to plug in the input power source if a fully charged battery is connected for first time. Battery will be allowed to discharge to OUT rail.

    Best Regards,

    Garrett
