BQ28Z620: About VC1

Part Number: BQ28Z620
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34Z100,

Tool/software:

Hi,

If the battery does not have a terminal between 1s and 2s (red circle in the figure below), is it OK to leave VC1 unconnected?

Best Regards,

Nishie

  • Hello Nishie,

No, VC1 will need to be connected. You will need access to each cell terminal to use this gauge.

    Regards,

    Adrian

  • Hi Adrian-san,

    Thank you for your support.

The 2Cell battery the customer is considering does not have a terminal between 1Cell and 2Cell (red circle in the figure above).

How do you connect VC1 and VC2?

    Best Regards,

    Nishie

  • Hello Yuta,

If the cell does not have a terminal between Cell 1 and Cell 2 then you will not be able to use this gauge with that battery. I would recommend looking at the BQ34z100.

    Adrian

  • Hi Adrian-san,

I'm sorry. I would like to confirm further.

I would like to use a BQ28Z620 to monitor the battery level and control the gate of the Protection FET while using a battery with no terminal between 1CELL and 2CELL. I think the Cell Balance function will be unavailable. Is there any problem with the following circuit configuration?

    Best Regards,

    Nishie

  • Hello Yuta,

Nope, can not recommend this solution as this will cause the gauge to not accurately measure the voltage for each cell which will affect gauging results.

    Regards,

    Adrian

  • Hi Adrian-san,

Is it correct to understand that this solution will affect the measurement results, and the remaining amount monitoring function will not be able to be fully utilized?

Also, I would like to have a gas gauge with the following functions. Is there an alternative product?

    ・2Cell Li-ion compatible

・No VCx pin (because there is no terminal between 1Cell and 2Cell of the battery)

・Has a pin to control the protective FET connected to the PACK+ side (pin like DSG or CSG)

    Best Regards,

    Nishie

  • Hello Yuta,

Is it correct to understand that this solution will affect the measurement results, and the remaining amount monitoring function will not be able to be fully utilized?

    That is correct.

The closest alternative product would be the bq34z100 as this does not have VCx pin. However, this gauge does not have pins for FET control. So, I would recommend pairing this gauge with a protector IC, or a battery monitor.

    Regards,
